An Offshore Supply Vessel-OSV or Platform supply vessel-PSV generally called a supply boat is a ship specially designed to supply offshore oil and gas platforms or other offshore units. These ships range from 50 to 100 meters in length and carry out an array of duties. Offshore platform supply vessels are self-propelled by two powerful engines with bridge towards bow of ship and long open deck on astern to carry cargo.

The most important task of an offshore supply vessel is to transfer supplies to the offshore oil and gas units and take back other materials to coast. Potable and non-potable water, diesel oil, pulverized cement, chemicals and cargo tanks for drilling mud used in the drilling procedure cover the almost all of the cargo deck.

Now a days a modern generation of platform supply vessel are more in use which are equipped with class one or class two dynamic positioning system which is normally applied when the vessel is going near to an oil platform or near to a drill rig for supplies.

Water, fuel oil and chemicals are nearly always required by oil platforms, offshore rigs or other offshore vessels. Some types of chemicals must be taken back to shore for right recycling or dumping purpose. Though, crude oil produce from the offshore drill rig is generally not a platform supply vessel payload.

General and specialty apparatus are transported on the large decks of offshore supply vessels. Nearly all PSV/OSV carry’s a mixture of deck goods and bulk cargo in tanks on lower deck. Many platform supply ships are designed or repaired/refitted to carry out a specific job.

A number of these offshore vessels are equipped with the firefighting capacity and fire monitors for offshore platform fire fighting so acts also as a platform standby vessel for SAR operations.

Some platform supply vessels are also used to help in the cleaning of an oil-spillage at sea that are equipped with recovery equipment and oil containment. PSV/OSV may also used as support vessel which are fitted with required tools, chemicals and carry’s workers to work on present oil wells with the objective to raise the offshore oil well’s productivity.

Platform supply vessels generally carriers about between 14 to 16 number of crew members and may be goes up to 36 crew members, depending on the size of offshore vessel, operational location and whether it is DP system equipped or not.
