Anchor Handling Tug vessels vary from offshore supply vessels (OSVs) or platform supply vessels (PSVs) in being built-in with winches for anchor handling and towing, with an open stern to permit the placing of anchors, and its engine having more power to raise the bollard pull.

Anchor Handling Tug (AHT) vessels are primarily constructed to handle anchors for oil rigs, derrick barges, pipelay barges, accommodation/constuction barges etc, towing them to location, positioning them up and also act as  as an Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel. They are also utilized to carrying supplies to and from offshore units.

Although, Anchor Handling Tug vessels are designed and build for anchor-handling and towing operations, they can also carry out other jobs such as ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle) works, standby vessel for SAR operation, and perform functions as supply vessel carrying cargo from shore to offshore rigs /platforms/ships or barges etc.

The anchor handling operations are performed by specifically designed machinery on Anchor Handling Tugs. Anchor Handling Tugs also have systems for rapid anchor release, which is handled from control console on the bridge or other manned tower positioned in location in direct communication with the bridge. The mention load used in the testing and design of the towing winch is double the stationary bollard pull.
Anchor Handling Tugs are designed to encounter the adverse conditions during sea rough and bad weather and can take on material supply tasks similar to offshore supply vessels, there between shore bases and offshore work locations. They also give towing support during tanker loading, towing of threatening things and deep-water anchor handling.
