The Drillship are designed to be used as a platform to carry out
oil and gas well upkeeps and repairs or used for final projects such as tubing
installation and casing, subsea tree installations and well capping. The DrillShips
are merchant ships utilized in researching offshore drilling of new oil and gas
reservoirs or for exploratory drilling works.
Drillships have the efficiency to work as
semi-submersible drilling rigs and also have a few exceptional aspects that
differentiate them from other types of drilling units like semi-submersibles Rigs, jackups Rigs, Barges, or
platform Rigs.
Larger and larger Drillships
are now built with more capabilities with latest technology assisting
operations from scientific research to ice-breaker class drilling ships. Now a day Drillships are fitted with
dynamic positioning systems which are capable of working in very deep oceans.
Every Drillships have an opening on the base of
the hull called “Moon pool”. Depending on the type of operation the ship is working,
many things needed for drilling operation such as drilling tools, drill
machines, small submersible crafts and divers may go through the moon pool into
sea.
As Drillships are constructed like a ship and
have its own propulsion, it can move from one drill location to other drill
location more faster in comparison to semi-submersibles and jackup barges and other
oil platforms which are towed by two to three or more tug
boats to the position.
Therefore Drillships are time saver, saving lot of time while sailing from one oilfield
to other oil field internationally, but the building expense of a Drillship is
much more than that of other offshore Rigs units.
Because Drillships are self propelled and sail on
its own engine they have greater mobility than other offshore drill units, but
Drillships are not stable as compared to semi-submersible Rigs. Drillships
may apply their anchors or may use the ship’s dynamic positioning (DP) system
to sustain its position at a fixed drilling position, Dynamic positioning is a
computer based system which to automatically maintain a ship's position and
heading by implying of its own propellers and thrusters.
