The judgment is left by International Maritime Organisation on to the operator of the DP vessel and its client whether which DP class applies to what type of DP operation. However, regarding to the hazards of DP operation, the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) has specified what DP Class should be applied in a particular DP operation. In the NMA rules and letter No. 28, inclusion of four DP classes are as stated :--

 

·        Class zero DP Operations where failure of position maintaining ability is not believed to jeopardize human lives, or make happen any destruction.

·        Class one DP Operations where failure of position maintaining capacity may cause destruction or pollution of minor significance.


·        Class two DP Operations where failure of position maintaining ability might results in people injury, pollution or harm with considerable level to the trade and industry concerns.

·        Class three DP Operations where failure of position maintaining capacity might results in deadly mishaps or critical pollution or harm with foremost trade and industry significances.

On the basis of above the category of ship is specified for every DP operations:

·        Class one DP units with equipment class one should be used through operations where failure of position maintaining capacity is not measured to risk of human lives or may cause any considerable destruction or may cause pollution notably more than minimal.

 

·          Class two DP units with equipment class two should be used through operations where failure of position maintaining ability might results in human injury, pollution or harm significantly to the trade and industry concerns.

 

·        Class three DP units with equipment class three should be used through operations where failure of position maintaining capacity might results in deadly misfortunes or grave pollution or harm with foremost trade and industry importance.
