The Dynamic positioning operator or DP operator (DPO) evaluates whether there is sufficient redundancy on hand at any given instant of the maneuver. International Maritime Organisation on 24-06-1996 has issued MSC/Circ.738 (instructions for Dynamic Positioning System Operator training). This submits to IMCA (International Marine Contractors Association) M 117[11] as suitable level.


If the Dynamic positioning watch-standing is completed on a Class 1 Dynamic positioning vessel a limited DP Operator certificate will be given or else for Class 2 and Class 3 Dynamic positioning vessels a complete DP Operator certificate will be delivered.

Following steps should be pursued for qualifying as a DP operator:

·        An Induction Dynamic positioning Course and an Examination on-line.

·         A minimum of 60 Days DP familiarization on board DP Ship at sea.

·        An Advanced Dynamic positioning course and an Examination on-line.

·        A minimum of 60 Days on board a DP ship as DP watch-stander.

·        A declaration of fittingness by the captain of a DP vessel.


The maritime authority approved Nautical Institutes operates the plan of the DP training and certification. The Nautical Institutes provide log books to DP trainees, they recognise training centers and manage the delivery of DP Certifications.

With more and more Dynamic positioning vessels and with rising DP skilled hands requirements, the importance of DPO is fast growing distinction. In 2009, because of this changing scenario has directed to the formation of The International Dynamic Positioning Operators Association (IDPOA).
